WANDSWORTH CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAUX

What specialist advice can we give?

Benefits enquiries form a large part of CAB work. Advisers sort out difficulties with benefit claims, help fill in forms and ensure people are receiving their full entitlement. We advice on benefits which can be claimed whilst working, which can help people back into the employment market. We have specialist Advisors, who may be able to provide representation at Tribunals.

Consumers have rights as well as responsibilities. Sometimes they need to check their rights as consumers and the CAB can often help define what these are.

Debt is a problem for millions of people, threatening health, home and family stability. The most common advice is to tackle it early - don't let the bills pile up. Advisers can help draw up a budget and agree a realistic repayment plan, in many cases negotiating with creditors such as utility companies, building societies and credit card suppliers. We participate at the Advice Desk at the County Court to help people who are facing repossession.

Employment problems often reflect deteriorating terms and conditions in the workplace. The CAB can advice on contracts and contractual rights for employees and employers, and suggest courses of action following redundancy or dismissal.

People can sometimes have problems in their relationships, both within families and between neighbours. The CAB can often help clients or put people in touch with other agencies with more specialist help.

WCABx provide initial advice on all aspects of housing including tenancy agreements, repairs and cases of harassment.

People seek guidance from the CAB on a wide range of legal issues, including going to court, claiming compensation, entitlement to legal aid and complaints against solicitors and the police.

The WCABx provide initial advice on immigration and nationality. People may be seeking asylum or separated from their families abroad. Where necessary the clients are referred to other appropriate agencies for further assistance.

The CAB can advice on issues such as exclusions, special needs education and admissions.

Tax advice includes facts and figures about income tax, VAT and council tax, and help with forms.
